Ships Blog 4th Jan 2017

Happy New Year to everyone, hope you all had a good Christmas! The marina dredge is now well underway with pontoons and fairways B,C and D almost complete. On a few occassions  the suction cutter has become blocked requiring downtime to clear the problem. The culprits have been cable ties, sponges and rags – food for thought next time we are working on our boats. The weather forecast is looking quite cold for the next few weeks so the water has been turned off on the pontoons to prevent any burst pipes. Our picture today is of the three masted boat that used to be anchored off Shotley for some 25 years. She blew ashore during a recent storm and has now been towed to Lowestoft to be broken up.

Morning all and welcome to a December Ships Blog. Beautiful sunny day in the harbour after quite a foggy start. Todays pictures include the dredger Rufford II which has commenced dredging here at Shotley. The campaign is probabaly going to be approximately for four weeks and will overlap with lock closure in January. If you have any queries regarding the dredge please do not hesitate to call the Control Tower on 01473 788982. Rest assured there will be access to and from the marina at all times except during lock closure.

Morning all and welcome to the Ships Blog. A beautiful day down here in the harbour. High pressure has kept the weather very settled and noticeably cooler! Dredge update, Goodchild Marine have been delayed at their current project and are planning on being at Shotley on the 13th December for up to four weeks i.e. over the Christmas break. The RAF Naval Pinnace has now been removed from our crane quay in preparation for its final break up. In the meantime the storms a couple of weekends ago have brought ashore a three master that has been anchored in the harbour for over twenty five years!

Morning all. Windy today coming from the south east and still feeling chilly. The theme for the next five days is for the wind to swing around to the south and then into the west by next week. We should also see a bit more sunshine early next week as well. Saw the following news item on the East Coast Pilot, of interest for those that visit Maldon by water!

Heybridge Basin lock to close for the winter (19th Sept 2016)

The lock accessing the very popular Heybridge Basin is to have a major refurbishment this winter and will be closed permanently from November 1st this year until March 31st 2017. Lock Keeper Grant Everiss told us that “all being successful, we will be able to lock more efficiently with a choice of locks to suit different sizes of visitor groups, lock choices being short, conventional and long. This should enable us to control water use and therefore levels more efficiently.”

Today’s picture is of the Trinity House ship ‘Patricia’ working in a stormy looking Harwich Harbour.
