Ships Blog 6/1/2014

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERAMorning all and welcome to the first Ships Blog of 2014. We hope you managed to survive the storms of the last couple of weeks. Over the break the lock masters kept an eye on all of the boats with regular patrols around the pontoons. A number of fenders were collected that had broken free and have been stored here at the Control Tower. If you think you may have lost one then come and see us. Looks like we have a couple more days of wet and windy weather before some respite over the coming weekend. Temperatures appear to be slowly declining over the coming week as well. Everybody is back at work and the yard gang are continuing with haul outs  and launches. Low water this morning took the tide level below chart datum by 0.34m, probably caused by the recent strong southerly winds. Richard Ireland our duty lock master took the opportunity to scrub one of the outer marker posts and repaint the depth marks which coincide with those in the lock. Happy New Year!

Good afternoon and welcome to the post weekend Ships Blog. Weather cool and clear here in Harwich Harbour. Plenty of sunshine with a 12 knot breeze, temperature about 9 degrees but with wind chill that falls to around 4 or 5 degrees. Forecast is for some rain overnight clearing tomorrow morning. There may also be some frost and fog around in the next few days. Yard crew are quiet today with a couple of lift outs booked. Notices have been posted around the marina to remind everyone that lock closure takes place from Monday 3rd Feb (07.00) until Friday 14th Feb (St Valentines!). Any queries then give the Control Tower a call on 01473 788982.

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERAGreat morning here in the harbour today. Bright sunshine and clear skies, well a few vapour trails courtesy of departures from Stansted Airport. Winds very light  and will probably stay that way for most of the weekend. A day for the fishermen rather than the sailors. In the yard the guys have been lifting some boats including ‘Eureka’ onto road transport. Hopefully a few of you have made it down to the boat show in London. Reports say that whilst footfall has been low, as in previous years, those attending have been buyers or keenly interested in boats and products. One local sea school has reported strong interest in all their courses both on the water and ashore. Don’t forget we will be holding our own ‘East Coast New Boat Show’ on the weekend of of the 26th and 27th April. Other reminders include that the Ablution Block in the marina is closed for refurbishment at the moment, mainly to re-lay the floor in the showers. Finally that the Shipwreck will also be closed during Lock Closure (3rd to 14th February) for refurbishment after the recent flooding. Have a good weekend folks!

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERAMorning and welcome to Thursday’s Ships Blog. Its a cold, overcast but very clear day here in the harbour. Blowing about 15 to 20 knots, south westerly. Forecast looks still  cooler for the weekend and into next week, so keep wrapped up warm. The Maersk ship with the damaged containers has now been cleared of broken boxes. Rumour has it that the ship was hit by an eleven metre wave in the Bay of Biscay with several boxes going over the side as well. All quiet in the yard today with the lock master out and about pressure washing the pontoons and clearing up rubbish from the recent storms.
