Ships Blog 11/2/2014

Morning all and welcome to a wet and very windy Ships Blog. Blowing around 25 to 30 knots at times from the south west.  Temperatures are around 2 to 3 degrees Celsius with the wind chill. Currently in the middle of lock closure with the lads down the ‘hole’ today in some pretty grim conditions. All the hydraulics are being serviced along with five hydraulic rams also being serviced. We have repaired some of the steelwork supporting the walk way on the inner gates. This  was overdue after a number of boats over recent years had made unintentional contact with the gates! It is still our intention to be open this Friday for normal operation.

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERAMorning all and welcome to Wednesday’s Ships Blog. Cold and windy start to the morning, sunrise looking quite forbidding! Out look staying cold and windy over the next few weeks. Wind moving round to the East this morning and blowing around 18 to 20 knots, wind chill 3 degs C! Unusual visitor today in Harwich Harbour is the cable laying ship ‘Grand Canyon’. Harwich Haven Authority have advised us that they will be dredging our approach channel in the next week or so to maintain the depth at 2M below chart datum. Will keep you posted when this takes place. In the yard fishing boat  ‘Jenny’ and sailing yacht ‘Penifold’ have been lifted ashore for winter storage.

Tendring-20140128-00181 Tendring-20140128-00183Morning all and welcome to Tuesday’s Ships Blog. Weather quite windy, the breeze is blowing around 20 to 25 knots from the South at the moment. Looking further out there does not seem to be any big freeze approaching at the moment. Over the next couple of days the wind will move round to the east bringing colder air from the continent but by the weekend it swings back towards the south and west. Preparations continue afoot for lock closure next week. The lock will close at 0700 Monday the 3rd to allow divers to enter the water clearing the sill and guides for the Stop Logs. The logs are then craned in and the lock pumped out over night ready for the work party’s to start the next day. The lock is then scheduled to re-open on Friday 14th February. In the yard Andy and Craig have brought ashore ‘St Christopher’ a Southerly and ‘Much the Millar’ for the winter. Won’t be long before they all go back in again!
