Ships Blog 12th April 2017

Here we are almost halfway through April and Easter upon us already. Last few weeks have been busy here at the marina with people getting their boats ready for the new season. The yard crew are flat out getting boats back in the water for Easter. In the last few days we have had a number of emergency lift outs with fouled propellers and groundings, however there will not be any naming or shaming!! Forecast for bank holiday weekend is looking a mixed bag at the moment. Friday there may be a few showers and Saturday is going to be windy – normal for Easter you might say. Other news. The Harwich Harbour Ferry has been running since the beginning of April and appears to be going from strength to strength. Recent Notices To Mariners will have informed everyone that the seasonal recreational marks have been deployed by HHA. That includes such buoys as the East Cardinal marking the end of the Harwich Shelf. Work continues apace with the new Shotley Lodge development where the retaining wall has now been put in and the ground works and foundations will be completed soon. Happy Easter!

Ships Blog 1st March 2017

Morning and welcome to the Ships Blog for 1st of March, first day of meteorological spring – believe it or not! We have cloudy sunshine again in the harbor with a force 4 westerly blowing. Compared to last nights wind and rain today appears a far better prospect. Forecast a little more breezy tomorrow although nothing of the order of storm’Doris’. Friday still looking pretty wet so keep your umbrellas handy! Today’s picture is of our esteemed ‘Captain of the Yard’,  Andy assisting one of our catamaran owners into the lock before departure from the marina.

Ships Blog 28th Feb 2017

Morning all and welcome to the end of Feb Ships Blog. At the moment the suns shining and the wind is blowing force three to four westerly, perfect sailing conditions – just a bit chilly thats all! Outlook remains cool, for the rest of the week/weekend with some rain about later this evening and some heavy rain forecast for Friday. We survived ‘Storm Doris’ without any damage to the boats or the marina. This was largely due to the fact that we were relatively sheltered from the westerly wind and we also managed to lower the level of the marina by approximately a metre to enhance the shelter given to the boats. Dates for the diary, Shotley Point Yacht Club have a visit to the light ship LV18 organised for the 11th March whilst on the 27th and 28th May they are holding an open weekend here at the marina. Todays picture is of the jack up platform ‘Wind Pioneer’ being towed out of Harwich Harbour.

Morning all – afraid a very poor outlook today here from the Control Tower. Prospects for the weekend looking very grim with plenty of wind about Friday and Saturday. There will be some rain about today, tomorrow and Saturday! The wind direction is predominantly from the south so a little warmer than of late. Going forward there is a cold snap forecast from mid February onwards so don’t put the thermals away just yet! The yard crew and lockmasters will be keeping an eye on the boats to make sure they are safe during the windy weather. Here at the marina lock closure was completed on the 27th January along with our five week dredging campaign. Alot of mud/silt was cleared from berths and fairways B to D. However as expected there was little mud deposition evident in the D/E fairway or berths and subsequently beyond them. We will shortly be carrying out an electronic survey of the marina with a new side scanner that we have recently aquired. This will help us to check what the dredge crew have managed to remove and to provide a base line for our next dredging campaign.
